This is proceeded through the examination of English translations of Takuboku’s various genres, particularly his most well-known tanka collections since Sakanishi Shio’s pioneering work A Handful of Sand (1934) to Goldstein and Shinoda’Sad Toys (1977), followed by an analysis of post-war studies by scholars representing a wide spectrum of approaches and various shades of problem consciousness while at the same time sharing a common interest in the works and experience of Takuboku. This includes works by literary historians, intellectual historians, political scientists and anthologists examining Takuboku in the literary as well as in the intellectual and social context of his time.
