Ihara Saikaku was born in Osaka, Japan, two years after Pu Sing Ling. The works of these two great authors are masterpieces, but although they were writing in the same time period, the worlds in which they lived were radically different.\nSung Ling lived in a world full of violence and massacre, whereas Saikaku lived in the prosperous, politically stable Genroku era. Saikaku wrote praisingly of the world in which he lived, describing it as an era of heaven-blessed peace and depicting the life of townsmen as a marvellous, dreamlike existence. Pu Sung Ling, on the other hand, wrote many ghost stories and weird tales, implicitly expressing in them his disgust for the government of the day and the lack of social justice. He satyrized his world in terms of strange fairies, foxes, ghosts and domestic animals, even using descriptions of weird, unnatural intercourse to express his political antipathy. The present paper discusses Japanese translations of Ryōsai shi-i, examining in particular transformations and variations in style. Mori Ogai, who was much influenced by German Romanticism, wrote his version, Shigarami sōshi, in the traditional style of Japanese literature. The naturalist writer Kunikida Doppo, wrote a translation. Which stayed very close to the original. With the development of the genbun-itchi style of writing, Ryōsai shi-i was adapted for modern readers with the use of Western literary tecniques, and its themes were borrowed and adapted. Of paticular note are Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Dazai Osamu, for their stylistic transformations and adaptations of classical works such as Ryō-sai Shi-i.\nRyōsai shi-i includes many fascinating tales from Chinese folklore, tales of a race of moon-dwellers and of human organ trasplants like those of today.
