In an age when many writers were influenced by Western culture, Rohan created a literature which both thematically and stylistically has its roots in the Eastern tradition.\nHowever, despite this, it must not be overlooked that Rohan entertained and enormous interest in the West. His very early novel, Ro dan-dan, published Meiji 22 (1989), is cosmopolitan in scope, being set in New York City. In Fūryū butsu, too, which was published in the same year, one can detect a keen awareness of the West.\nRohan's vision of the West, as presented in these works, is very unique. Its underlying elements will be ascertained through analysis of the pōet Tairakku in Ro dan-dan.
