What are the essential qualities of the diary? I would like to consider these questions in conjunction with the portrait history has painted of Michinaga.\nIn his political life, Michinaga held the ranks of Nairan （内覧） sadaijin, （左大臣） sessho, （摂政） and dajō-daijin, （太政大臣） serving the lchijō, Sanjō and Goichjō emperors. During the reigns of these three emperors, his daughters (Shoshi, Kenshi and Ishi) served at court with the rank of chūgū. The Goichijō emperor was Michinaga's grandson. After he became emperor at the age of nine, Michinaga advised him as sesshō. Moreover, Michinaga's daughter, Ishi, served in the court of this Goichijō emperor and Michinaga was on intimate terms with those in the imperial household. When Ishi became the empress Michinaga composed the famus waka, \"Kono yo oba…\"\nHowever, Michinaga spent the greater part of his career as nairan, becoming sesshō for only one year in the reign of the Goichijō emperor. He subsequently relinquished his title as sesshō to his eldest son, Yorimichi, and became dajō-daijin, but took the tonsure shortly afterwards and built Hōjōji Temple. He died December 4, Manju 4 (1027). His life after taking the tonsure is recosded in detail in Shōyūki （小右記） Eiga monogatari, and other writings, but not in Midō Kanpuku ki, for the latter is the record of Michinaga's political life.\nFourteen volumees of Midō kanpuku ki, written in Michinaga's hand, are now preserved in the Yōmei Bunko in Kyoto and are regarded as a very valuable treasure.
