Since that time Chinese work in this field has flourished and has achieved outstanding results. In recent years there has been a growing tendency to introduce materials from Japan on a broad scale and to study them in an unrestricted fashion, and authors and works which had been considered taboo are now being studied more and more. One may now say that Japanese studies have become orthodox and not heretical. Scholars doing this research are now much younger and, unlike the past, they are in complete command of the Japanese language. Also, the dissemination of information has improved, and learned journals devoted to foreign literature have increased in number. The present period may truly be called the golden age of Japanese literary studies in China. With this, academic disputes about Japanese literature are increasing in intensity. Today Chinese scholars in this field are cooperating to publish a History of Japanese Literature and also various kinds of dictionaries on this subject.
