Employing such quotations of poem makes it possible to introduce the atmosphere of the poems and their implications into the novel, and to add some depth which otherwise could never be achieved. It helps to express the feelings in the story in full,and thus, its function is indispensable.\n\"Kago\" or words from poems of \"Kokin-wakashu\"and others penetrate into \"The Tale of Genji\", and their roles in its literary expression have been discussed considerably. In this presentation, I examine the word \"asagao\" in \"The Tale of Genji\", which never appears in \"Ko kinwakashu\" or any other anthology compiled by Imperial command. I attempt to consider the meaning and the literary value of the word \"asagao\"in \"The Tale of Genji\" in comparison with equivalent expressions in works before that.
