During the Edo period, insect cages frequently served as a subject matter for poetry, both popular (haikai, senryū and kyōka) and classical (waka, kanshi). Insect cages were associated with autumn, and added a poetic charm to the season. Poems about insect cages typify the Japanese tendency to appreciate nature within the context of daily life.
