The story consists of two separate sections: the life of an delinquent youth and the tale of a young thief who is reformed after overhearing the sound of a koto. The first of Higuchi's works to be written during her time as a peddler in Ryusenji-cho, the story testifies to her perceptive social observation while revealing a marked change in her prose style. Scholars have previously emphasized two points: the influence on Higuchi of Hirata Tokuboku's theory of art for art's sake, and Higuchi's own experiences in Ryusenji-cho.\nIn my paper I would like to build on these theories with the following points:\n(1) According to her diary, Hirata visited Higuchi's house and told her that \"the Japanese literary world derives its strength from the achievements of women writers.\" Inspired by this, Higuchi decided to use as material for her story the theme of musical reformation from Section 429 of Kokin Chomonju, \"The tale of a thief whose heart was changed upon hearing the music of a hichiriki [a kind of Japanese flute].\"\n(2) Komiyama Shoji, the husband of Higuchi's cousin Hirose Bun was deserted by his wife after their decline into poverty and was subsequently suspected of robbery. Higuchi made efforts to help him and took pity on Kaichiro, his 13-year-old son. These events may have provided material for \"The Sound of the Koto.\"\n(3) Higuchi had read articles entitled \"To Write\" (published in Bungakkai, 1893) and \"Literature and Livelihood\" (Waseda Bungaku, 1892).
