The Japanese government officials who thought along Chinese traditional ways went into seclusion in Heian Japan. But the bureaucratic nobility of the Heian period, such as the Yasutane, assimilated these ideas into Japanese culture and made them a reality in practice. It was not a carbon copy of the original, although the Japanese adopted the Chinese tradition of living in seclusion there were many differences below the surface. In fact it has become an altogether concept.\nThis paper examines Yasutane's \"Chitei-ki\", an elaborate reworking of Hakkyoi's \"Chijou-hen\".
