While studying Japanese material at Hopp Ferenc Museum of Far Eastern Arts I was asked by Ms. CZE Eva, the chief curator and Ms. BINCZK Monika to read the small letters written on the paper sliding screen of it with a magnifying glass. It said “Koishikuba tazunekite miyo”. Sliding the screen up, you can see a small fox dressed in short-sleeved kimono which is about 1.5 cm tall sitting inside. The taste of netsuke is enhanced by these words and the amiable fox.\nNeedless to say, it is from the legend of Kuzu no Ha, or Shinoda-zuma. The fox in the lantern is in the flow from Hoki-shô, Abe no Seimei Monogatari, Ashiya Dôman Ôuchi-kagami and the like to the dancing play of kabuki performances, mitate ukiyo-e, Yoshino Kuzu by Tanizaki Jun-ichiro, comic strips on Seimei-onmyôdô of the Tsuchimikados that are popular now.\nHOPP Ferenc was a very successful businessman in Hungary and also a great admirer of oriental art. His collections are precious monuments that show us the Orientalism of the time. There are still works expected to be found and they might live new insight as the further study is carried on.\nThis netsuke is a tiny craftwork, however, it is necessary to consider every aspect of the literary elements and artistry as seen in which of the legend of Abe no Seimei.\nThe Oriental study room of the museum has Tsukiyama Niwa Tsukuri Den, Kôhen by Akisato Rito published in Bunsei 11 (1828) among the archives to be examined and categorized. Rito is a writer who was active from 1772 to 1829 as the same time that rôjû Matsudaira Sadanobu had the famous garden Yokuon-en built and had Tani Buncho and others draw pictures. It was re-published in the Meiji era. In 1948 Nakjima Shunkô re-edited it and Unsodo published it.\nI think this belongs somewhere between literature and art. Other kinds of style books are categorized in the same manner.
