However, in the mid-80s manga fanatics began rearing their heads and by the late 80s and early 90s they and their counterpart, anime otaku, began to populate Japanese classes. This trend does not look as if will abate, so I propose to take the opportunity at this year's Shiryôkan Conference to discuss the relationship of manga to Japanese literature.\nNo doubt many are of the opinion that the relationship between literature and manga is tenuous at best, but it is one that cannot be ignored. It is fortuitous that in classical Japanese literature Tsuboi Kô's manga adaptation of The Tale of Genji, entitled The Illustrated Genji Monogatari, has been rendered into English by Alan Tansman, and I will compare the Tansman manga translation to the Seidensticker translation and to Kô's Japanese original, investigating (1) the transference from word to image and (2) the translation from Japanese language and convention to those of English.\nIn the transference from word to image, the most obvious difference is the reduction in size: Seidensticker's 1000-page translation becomes a mere 300 pages in its manga adaptation. Is a picture worth a thousand words? That is the question, but other differences, reflecting the radical change in medium, also abound. First, as in any translation, the English manga required compromises in word choice and expressions and in cultural convention to ensure transference of meaning. Some of the difficulty is circumvented by the contemporizing of language and situation in the Kô’s manga version, but some surprising developments, nonetheless, manifest themselves when, for example, the English manga attempts to be true to the spatial and sequential order of the Japanese. These disjunctures in text and convention add interesting and unexpected dimensions when American readers encounter The Illustrated Genji Monogatari in English translation.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10003_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.24619/00002631","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10003_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国文学研究資料館"}]},"item_10003_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0387-7280","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Miyake, Lynne K"},{"creatorName":"ミヤケ, リン K","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"25137","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"MIYAKE, Lynne K","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"25138","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2018-09-10"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"I2405.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"15.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"研究発表 説話・物語の画像化 画像は千の言葉に価するか ―漫画源氏物語―","url":"https://kokubunken.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2635/files/I2405.pdf"},"version_id":"050917b0-72da-42f8-9a5a-608277909ef3"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"conference paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_5794"}]},"item_title":"研究発表 説話・物語の画像化 画像は千の言葉に価するか ―漫画源氏物語―","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"研究発表 説話・物語の画像化 画像は千の言葉に価するか ―漫画源氏物語―"},{"subitem_title":"Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words? : The Tale of Genji Goes Manga","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10003","owner":"3","path":["261"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2016-10-07"},"publish_date":"2016-10-07","publish_status":"0","recid":"2635","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["研究発表 説話・物語の画像化 画像は千の言葉に価するか ―漫画源氏物語―"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-15T15:31:42.740737+00:00"}
