The work was popular because, in addition to its theme of enlightenment and literary interest, it presented universal orders that appealed across political-party lines and national borders.\nThe illustrations in the book had originally been bronze-block prints but were later replaced with more versatile lithographs created by a Western-style painter Kamei Shiichi. The composition of many of the lithograph in the book, which are explicit and realistic, shows the characters looking down from somewhere high. The bird's eye-view technique and perspective are particularly used in the picture of Athens. The view point in the opposite side of the vanishing point is high up the sky or above the sea. The imaginary view points from the sky are the important elements that characterize Ryûkei's works. For instance, one could easily observe the whole movements of the battles in such works as Keikoku Bidan and Ukishiro Monogatari by viewing from such imaginary eyes located in a higher place.\nThe maps often used in Keikoku Bidan and Ukishiro Monogatari also have these eyes, and which have the supplemental elements to explain the works and make the world recognized as a side that is the concentration of numberless dots.\nIn contrast with the “limited-part” spatial recognition of realism that gives a view from the fixed point, the maps provide the imaginary space of the whole area composed of the conceptual “aspects”. While the former deals deeply with the person's location, the latter doesn't with the location or the direction of individuals. In the world perceived as a set of “aspects”, there is no pre-determined perspective.
