The hero unwittingly commits incest with his younger sister: an unusual theme, but one that was in fact, as is well known, taken from a translated work of Maupassant's “Le Port” (translated by Baba Kocho as “Funagakari” in 1902). In “Le Port”, the hero, a sailor of many years who is sailing on foreign seas, listens to the story of a woman in a port town who he spends an evening with. He then realizes this is his long lost sister and laments his fortune. Doppo adopted the motif of the trick of fate that has the hero marry his sister, and included his own views on life, that people are controlled by the inexplicable and mystic powers of fate, and can be placed into unfortunate situations, into the work “Unmei Ronja”. When the work was first printed it did not draw much attention, but was included his third collection of works, “Unmei” (1906), and quickly gained attention. Praise came from Natsume Sôseki, Masamune Hakuchô, and Tokuda Shûsei, prompting reactions from the literati of the time.\nThis reaction to “Unmei Ronja” in Japan spread over the sea to the literary scene in Korea. “Petaragi” (1921) by Kim Dong In and “Macha” (1941) by Yoo Gin Uoo clearly drew inspiration from it. Two Korean authors with completely different styles and works separated by a space of twenty years being influenced by the same work most likely lends to the motif on “Unmei Ronja”. Kim Dong In’s “Petaragi”, like Maupassant”s “Le Port” and Doppo’s “Unmei Ronja”, features the immoral romance between siblings and family members and the misfortune that befalls the hero; a story that brought the attention of the Korean literati. Kim Dong In became familiar with the motif of incest from Doppo’s work while studying in Japan and chose to bring up the problem, which had been taboo in Korean literature up to that point. In his adaptation, Kim Dong In did not simply use the motif in Doppo’s “Unmei Ronja”, but revised it according to traditional Korean ethics. In Korean society of the day, it was taboo even to mention affairs between a man's wife and the man's younger brother. Kim Dong In decided to challenge this taboo, combining the problems of wives and husbands, siblings and families in a Korean society where Confucian morals dictated that questions about the virginity of a woman (the bride) would mean her death, creating a unique work.\nWhat deserves attention here is that Doppo, adopting the theme of incest from Maupassant's “Le Port”, wrote “Unmei Ronja”, which then was further adopted by Kim Dong In. This is evidence of how modern Japanese literature, which was under strong influence from western literature, went on to influence the modern literatures of East Asian nations such as Korean and China. In this process, Doppo is shown to be closely linked to modern Korean writers.
