The present study examines the close relationship between Saikaku’s novel and Tsurezure gusa, trying to understand it within the framework of the reception of Tsurezure gusa during the 17th century. Kenko’s image is associated in Saikaku’s mind with realities like “letters”, “inkstones”, “brushes”, that is with the act of writing, and it seems that it has strongly influenced Saikaku’s understanding of what a novel is.
