Cultural exchanges between Japanese literati and embassy staff are well known, but what is often overlooked is that the year before Higashi Honganji opened a mission in Shanghai, where cultural exchanges between missionary monks and Qing literati took place.\nThis presentation looks at the missionary work of Matsumoto Hakka (1838-1926) and Kitakata Shinsen (1850-1905), monks employed at the Shanghai mission, and their exchanges with Qing literati through their missionary activities.\nHakka was involved in the Urakami Followers Incident, and traveled with Otani Koei and Narushima Ryūhoku, known through the records in Hakka Bibōroku, Hakka Kōkai Roku, etc. However, little research has been done and few timelines have been made on Hakka’s life after this, from his time at the Shanghai mission (Meiji 10-12, 1877-1879). Shinsen is known, along with Yang Shoujing, for bringing Hokuhi-style calligraphy to Japan. Shinsen was also involved in the compilation of Yu Yue’s Dongying Shixuan and other exchanges with late Qing literati. Research on him has traditionally been done from the perspective of calligraphy, but little work has been done on his experiences and actual activities in China. Besides these, Higashi Honganji Shanghai Kaikyō 60 Nen Shi (60 Year History of the Higashi Honganji Shanghai Mission) also records the missionary activities of the Shanghai mission, but this contains insufficient information on the missionary monks or their exchanges with Qing literati.\nIn order to fill this gap, during the presentation I will use Okazaki Seidon’s diary, Shina Zaikin Zasshi, as well as historical material on Hakka and Shinsen (Hakusan-shi Honseiji, Kanazawa-shi Jōfukuji archives).\nFrom Shina Zaikin Zasshi it can be seen that the literati of Shanghai frequently visited the mission and made exchanges with the missionary monks through poetry and painting. In addition, cards, poems, letters, paintings, etc. from the literati can be found among the materials left regarding Hakka and Shinsen.
