ISHIKAWA Masamochi’s Hida-no-takumi Monogatari was, however, severely criticized by Kyokutei Bakin’s Review and Critique of Honchô Suiko-den, or Japanese Shuihu Zhuan (Water Margin). His criticism was directed to the whole Kinsei-wabun-Shôsetsu, and that really was an animadversion in consideration of general public reader’s existence. The idea to attract attention as antithesis for Bakin’s such point of view on yomihon, is that of ÔTA Nampo who commented ISHIKAWA Masamotchi’s Ômi-agata Monogatari “is not worldly”. By the way, Nampo’s Tamagawa-jari on which reading records of Ômi-agata Monogatari and Hida-no-takumi Monogatari exist, has another criticism following these, which says Bandô kibun Nureginu sôshi written by Shakuyakutei Nagane “is beyond worldly style “. What is the worldly yornihon in his sense? In the preface of Nureginu sôshi, Nagane referred to yomihon of former ages and expressed the dissatisfaction to the present ones, saying that “although a lot of strange episodes that attract people appear in them, they are mere morality plays and there is no discussion”. On the other hand, he praised himself that his original work contained both morality and discussions. Therefore, checking the relation of morality and discussions in this story, a criterion of morality is whether character’s act is suitable for its duty, and discussions have the role to return the person who nearly neglects his duty, to a previous ideal situation. Namely, in Nureginu sôshi, this consciousness of life with clear awareness of one’s duty is penetrating the whole as a firm sense of values. As a result, certain moderation and quality are contained in this work. The reason why Nanpo who desired yomihon which is suitable for indulging in peaceful world (Asagao dairy), esteemed this work, may be this point. On the basis of what I considered, I would like to check that there has been another reception of yomihon which was different from worldly style.
