In particular, the following two styles of criticism will be analyzed: “Watakushi Hihyou (literary means “I Criticism”)” and “Jinbutsu Hyouron (literary means “Character Criticism”)”. I will consider the environment of criticism in those days comprehensively by a stylistic comparison of those, which flourished during the same period with different backgrounds.\nAs soon as Kobayashi Hideo made a debut in 1929, he established his own style in criticism, and he was welcomed into the leading position in literary world. His style of criticism was called “I Criticisms” (e.g. Kobayashi Hideo Wo Kamikudaku by Yazaki Dan, 1934) in comparison with Watakushi shousetsu (“I Novel”). In “I Criticism”, I, the first person, that is the author, is mainly focused, because the process of the author’s thought rather than criticized object itself is more important. Therefore, it can be said that readers need “I”. This original style attracted and stimulated many readers and followers such as Fukada Kyuuya and Furuya Tsunatake etc.\nOn the other hand, because of the increase number of the articles focusing on criticism of character, which were found in contemporary general-journals and literary journals, it became like “the age of Character Criticism” (Jinbutsu Ron No Kousei by Oya Souich in 1934). Critics such as Baba Tsunego and Sugiyama Heisuke introduced and criticized celebrities in every such areas as politics, business, and thought etc. In the literary field, Sakka Ron (criticism of author) became very popular. In it, the third person was mainly focused with description of various aspects of the character. That is, readers need the third person.\nThus, “I Criticism” needs the first person and “Character Criticism” needs the third person. However, things are more complicated, because there is a different type of “Character Criticism” which points out that the key person is not the third person but the first person, although it looks like readers need the third person. In Jinbutsu Ron (1936) Kawabata Yasunari said; Jinbutsu Ron “Character criticism” deals with more or less the person who discusses rather than the person who is discussed.
