It was established around the 9th century and reached its peak from the 10th to 11th century. The uta-awase was also an occasion where artistic handicrafts such as bundai and kazusashi, costumes, music and dancing were shown.\nThe dairi-uta-awase in Tentoku 4 nen (960) of the Murakami Dynasty was referred to the volume of e-awase ‘Genji monogatari’ and became a model thereafter. The dairi-uta-awase took place in the western side of the Seiryō-den palace, the eastern side of the Kōryōoen palace, the corridor of the two palaces and the small courtyard. A century after the contest, uta-awase became popular again with admirers of the Murakami Dynasty. \nIn this presentation, I will focus on the space of the uta-awase in the Go-Reizei Dynasty that was modeled on the dairi-uta-awase in Tentoku 4 nen (960). Showing the positions of the chairperson, the katoudo of the right and left sides, and the bundai and the kazusashi in plan view, I will examine the space used by the Dynasties for their entertainment while taking account of the participants’ viewpoints.\nThe Yūshi naishin-nō uta-awase, in 1050, took place in the Kayanoin-shinden palace and the Imperial princess Yūshi, her ladies of the court and her grandfather Fujiwara no Yorimichi were seated in the western side of the main building. It was the uta-awase where men and women mixed. The court nobles were seated in a roofed passage on the west side and the katoudo of uhō (the right side) were seated in a southern open veranda. The ladies of the court were seated under the western eaves of the main building. The bundai (open-worked silver of an arabesque inlaid with jewel) was placed in front of the western door under the southern eaves of the main building.\nThe kōgōgū Kanshi syunjū-uta-awase took place in the Ichijō-in Imperial palace and the empress Kanshi (the wife of the Emperor Go-Reizei) sat in the eastern side of the main building. The kichō (shōbu gasane) were set up along the bamboo blinds of the eastern side of the eaves. The five ladies of the court, both sahō (the left side) and uhō, sat under the eastern eaves and the other five ladies of the court, also both sahō and uhō, sat under the southern eaves, centering the place where the royalty were seated. The court nobles sat on either the eastern or southern roofed passages.
