MLA (museums, libraries, and archives) institutions have introduced the practice of crowdsourcing as part of their volunteer efforts. This article focuses on examples from occidental MLA institutions. Having discussed the tendencies in use of crowdsourcing in such institutions, I present a classification in types of crowdsourcing tasks within the MLA context. I have also included example projects for each type. \nIn regards to the situation in Japan, I was unable to confirm any instances of crowdsourcing among museums and archives. I was able to find only three examples of crowdsourcing in libraries. While, practically speaking, the introduction of crowdsourcing in MLA institutions requires challenges such as certain employees to increase their workload, the potential benefits of crowdsourcing can be recognized, both in terms of its conceptual and tangible advantages. Research points out three common reasons why MLA institutions in Japan are reluctant to introduce the practice of crowdsourcing: insufficient knowledge, concerns about various rights issues, as well as concerns about quality-control.
