We see this as early as Gukenshō by Ichijō Kaneyoshi (1402-1481). We also see it in commentaries from the Sōgi-Sanjōnishi-ke of commentaries, including Shōmon-shō by Botanka Shōhaku (1443-1527), and the Isei-shō by Kiyoharano Nobukata (1475-1550). However, references to Genji increase dramatically with the Ketsugi-shō by Hosokawa Yūsai (1534-1610) and the Shūsui-shō by Kitamura Kigin (1624-1705).
