The Ongi-ha school, who adopted the idea that Japanese words consist of the meaning of each sound, had little, if not nothing, presence in the kana-only writing movement. Itsura no koe no kangae (1886) by Ishiko Mitsuteru is invaluable in that we can find in it the voice of the Ongi-ha school as an overwhelming minor group among the Kana-no-kwai, the largest union in the kana-only writing system movement.
