The purpose of this report is to compare it with other works written during the same period (e.g.books by S.Mikami and K.Takatsu, W.G.Aston, and Y.Haga) using a comparison table (table A) and, also, to assess it's worth and influence on later Japanese studies. In his study, Florenz referred to the greatest number of works of literature and authors, etc. compared to his contemporaries and, also, was the first to use the philological and crytical methods with respect to Japanese literature. These methods have exerted a great influence on later Japanese studies. In view of this influence, it is suprising that Florenz's achievements have not been acknowlegded in these later Japanese works.
