This text records episodes from the life of Keishin-in (1728-1891) the mother of Confucian scholar Hayashi Jussai, who played a major role in establishing the shogunate's cultural and educational policies during the latter half of the Edo period. Written by Jussai's younger sister, “Hahaso no Ochiba” provides a rare glimpse into the everyday life and speech of the wife of a daimyo who held an important position within the shogunate, Matsudaira Norimori of the Mino lwamura han. Furthermore, unlike documents written in formal and masculine language chronicling the activities and speech of the daimyo, “Hahaso no Ochiba” is significant in that it is written in a characteristically female style.
