But the firm made it a condition that Osugi’s satirical writing is also compiled in the book, to which Osugi agreed and the publication of the book was decided. The firm was interested in selling the book under the name of the famous anarchist Osugi. That is why Osugi's name is emphasized in the print advertisement. The ad bore the slogan “serious but witty.” However, does the book have the “seriousness” suitable for the catchphrase? It is a compilation of satirical writing and cartoons, a book based on laughter. What is behind the grandiose claim that the book is “serious” has to do with the evaluation axis of literary terms in the literary world and publishing journalism. Since 1890, “serious” was a hackneyed expression for masterpieces.\nHowever, Osugi who was advertised as “serious” does not appear to have willingly used this term in his writings. He used this with irony once in his critique of the novel Ogawa Mimei’s Lie.
