 note = {pdf, 『徒然草』第二十五段は、京極殿と法成寺を例として世の無常を説く章段である。その中の、「桃李もの言はねば、誰とともにか昔を語らん」という無常を感嘆する文章は、「桃李不言、下自成蹊」という漢籍の故事を踏まえている。しかし、桃李はものを言わないが、花と実のために、その樹の下に自ずから人が集まってきて小道ができるというこの故事の原意とは意味も用法も異なっている。そこで、この表現が、もともとの意味から離れて、懐旧の思いを語るものに変遷していく経緯を中国と日本の古典作品に見られる用例にそって考察を行う。

たとえば、近世の諸注釈から、『徒然草』の注釈書は、この文章の出典として、『和漢朗詠集』菅原文時の漢詩「桃李不言春幾暮、煙霞無跡昔誰栖」と、『後拾遺集』出羽弁の和歌「ふるさとの花の物いふ世なりせばいかにむかしのことを問はまし」をあげている。また、朗詠古注の『永済注』と『平家物語』巻三「少将都還」は、この漢詩と和歌を並べた形であげている。ここでの「桃李不言」の表現は『徒然草』と同じ、懐旧の思いを詠み込んだものである。こうして、この表現を懐旧の意味で使う傾向は中国の漢詩の中に見られ、かなり早い段階から日本漢詩にも見られた。また、和歌においても、「桃李不言」の故事を踏まえて懐旧の思いが詠まれるようになっているのである。

このように、この表現は原典の意味から離れて、中国と日本の漢詩文、さらに和歌においても、懐旧の思いを詠む用法が現れ、複雑な変遷の経緯を経ている。こういう出典を用いる時、原典からではなく、変容した形のものを取り入れる間接的な受容方法は、『徒然草』の漢籍出典を考える時には、看過できないものである。

The 25th section of Tsurezuregusa is about the mutability of the world taking Kyogoku-dono Palace and Hojo-ji Temple as an example. The phrase “桃李もの言はねば、誰とともにか昔を語らん”, I am enting the mutability of the world, has its originin the Chinese proverb “李不言、下自成躁”. But the meaning of the phrase in Tsurezuregusa is quite different from its Chinese origin. Therefore, this research is to consider the change in meaning of this phrase taking its usage example in Chinese and Japanese classic works.
The annotated editions of Tsurezuregusa in Edo period pointed out that this phrase has its source in the Chinese poetry「桃李不言春幾蟇、煙霞無跡昔誰栖」written by Sugawara fumitoki and the Japanese poetry「ふるさとの花の物いふ世なりせばいかにむかしのことを問はまし」written　by　Dewa　no　ben.　Also,　this　Chinese poetry and Japanese poetry are cited together in Wakan Roei Shu with Notes by Esai and The Tails of the Heike. In these expressions it's used as a phrase to express nostalgia for days gone by, just as in Tsurezuregusa. So we can tell the meaning of the Chinese proverb “桃李不言､下自成膜” has changed to a phrase to express nostalgia for the old days in Chinese poetry and Japanese poetry.},
