内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 What kind of position might Japanese literature come to occupy in the world's literature ? Attention to this question is beginning to play a role in studies on the Genjimonogatari and a number of other classical and modern literary texts. In the case of gunki-monogatari, (martial narratives), however, this question has not necessarily been accorded due interest, and the effect has been the exclusion of this genre from international studies on epic poetry. It is true that, in the later years of Meiji, and then again during the postwar era, this problem has been the object of some concern. However, especially in the postwar period, such concern has been more or less restricted to studies of historical stylistics. To give studies of gunki-monogatari a larger role in the international (comparatist) study of epic poetry, a reconsideration of studies in this genre, with greater attention to the narrative method of gunki-monogatari, will be required.
In the present report, as an initiative in this direction, I will consider how the various heroes of "tales of combat" (protagonists of the kassendan from which the genre derives its name) are described and what kind of roles they play in the narratives. I would like to draw upon examples from the Heikemonogatari, in the more or less final version represented by the Kakuichi text thereof, together with various early texts of the Heike, as well as the Taiheiki and other narratives of the gunki-monogatari genre. The objective is to understand what kind of text the Heikemonogatari is. This should serve also as a step towards answering the question of what kind of role the study of gunki-monogatari can play in international studies of the epic.
It is fortunate that more and more outstanding translations of gunki-monogatari into foreign languages are being published, and studies in this genre by foreign scholars are beginning to appear, while within Japan, scholars of Western classical literatures are also beginning to show an interest in gunki-monogatari, so that the groundwork for the type of reconsideration envisaged here is gradually being laid.
