MASAOKA Shiki (1867-1902 ) is known mostly for his poetical and theoretical works, which were in fact epoch-making in the last years of the 19th century. He gave new life to the traditional forms of haiku and waha ,and thus he is often said to have restored fundamental values of the aesthetic tradition. The first aim of this study will be to go back to his early writings and to analyse the meaning of the words "aishin" "aikyo" /愛身・愛郷 as they are found in the First Volume of the Essays Fudemakase (vol,1 、1888 )、to take in account the strong links to the local community and the implications of Shiki's creation. The second purpose of the study is to consider Shiki's attitude towards the outer world, towards foreign things and ideas , and to understand the interrelation between "things far and near".
The study has been based upon the following prose works: Fudemakase (1884-1892 ) ; the Essays of the last years -Shōra gyoku. eki (1896), Bokujū itteki (1901), Byōshō rokushaku (1902) and the writings in form of diary notes collected under the litle Gyōga manroku(1901-1902). |
