内容記述 The most popular of Japan's five great folktales,"Momotaro" ("The Peach Boy") haxs been researched from many different angles. Among these scholarly treatments, the folklore research of Yanagita Kunio and Origuchi Shinobu has not lost its vibrancy and continues to give present day researchers many ideas for the study of the tale.
Yanagita's interest in "Momotaro," however, is heavily biased toward the first half of the story, which recounts Momotaro's birth and growth. His study slights the latter part of the story-the conquering of the demon. For this reason, we might conclude that "Momotaro" has yet to reveal itself to us in full. Indeed, the character of Momotaro must be understood in terms of the story as a wholes, not just the first half. This paper represents an effort toward completing our partial view of Momotaro.
We usually consider the hero of the story "Momotaro" to be Momotaro himself. If we revise this point of view, however, we can conceive of other hidden heroes. In the context of the performance of the tale, there is a narrator and an audience who make up a community. For this community, the grandmother and grandfather are the main "insider" characters. They may in fact live at a boundary-at the river's edge-but they are the only characters who belong on the inside, within the community.If we regard these two main characters as the axis of the tale, then Momotaro becomes nothing more than a foreigner from a place beyond the river. And for these two people for whom the substance of "Momotaro"is Momotaro's subjugation of the other foreigner-the demon-the story is, schematically, the tale of the conquering of one foreigner by another.
This being the case, the relationship of the two foreigners-their parity or lack thereof-comes to concern us. Why did the foreigner Momotaro have to conquer the foreigner demon? I believe that these two characters represent the positive and negative qualities ascribed to foreigners. In other words, Momotaro's slaying of the demon is none other than an act that he, as a foreigner (child of a god) who has drifted into the community from a strange land to settle there, must carry out to prove himself to that community.
