内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Western literature has nothing comparable to the long and respected tradition of the feminine literary diary in Japan. This unique genre in its literary sophistication and provision of literary role models is of much interest to those attempting an understanding of the newly flourishing literary diary genre in the West. The intricate relationship between social conditions and status of women and literary accomplishment provides us with one of the explanations for the rise of this genre in the West coincident with its decline in Japan. The Japanese concept of the literary significance of experience has made the literary rendering of experience natural in Japanese literature. The feminine literary diary is based on this concept, as is its modern offshoot, the “watakushi-shosetsu”or private “I-novel”and both of these Japanese forms are alien to the Western values of individual, directly rendered experience.
This paper examines the feminine literary diary tradition in Japan from the earliest Court diaries by men in the 10th century, through the Tosa Nikki and the Heian Diaries up to the modern literary diaries of lchiyo Higuchi and Itsue Takamure. It also suggests the degeneration of the genre in the best-seller “suicide diaries“ of the 20th century, and its regeneration in the contemporary feminine “I-novel. ” The raison d’être of the Japanese feminine literary diary as an expression of “feminine conflict“ is also examined in literary terms, and the concepts of mutability and fragmentation are considered from a Western point of view to explain much that seems trivial to Westerners as being the very essence of the genre called “Nikki Bungaku”or diary literature in Japan.
Lastly, the Japanese criticism of Western feminine diaries will be examined in the light of the native Japanese genre, and the deeper understanding which can be reached as a result of such a comparative study will be demonstrated.
