内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 It is common knowledge that Chikamatsu’s Jōruri plays were written for performance by chanters in the puppet theatre. In Chikamatsu’s time the plays were published as joint works between the author who wrote the text and the chanter who composed the music and supplied the musical notation in the published texts. The plays were published with the musical notation primarily for amateur performers who could use them as practice texts for lessons. In Chikamatsu’s (and others') plays the chanter added a postscript in which they verfied the validity of the musical notation in the texts. In one such postscript it says that the musical notation is a guide for the reader in understanding the structure and meaning of the play as well as the feeling behind the words. This is an important principle to understand when approaching a Chikamatsu play as a literar text, because Chikamatsu’s method of composition is founded upon musical concepts which were created by the chanters . Chikamatsu had to write plays to suit the demands of the chanters’art.
It is fortunate for us today that Jōruri texts were published with musical notation, because an understanding of the code of this system enables the reader to recreate the musical movement of the play and to better understand the conventions of the Jōruri theatre. In my talk I explain in concise and practical terms how the musical notation and a general conception to the Jōruri theory of music can be a helpful guide for the reader of Jōruri plays to a better understanding of the texts as literary works composed for the puppet theatre.
