内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Masaoka Shiki’s (1867-1902) earliest tanka were undeniably hackneyed and dull, but by 1898, when he began his tanka reform, they had improved a great deal. In that year, he serialized the essay “Letters to a Tanka Poet“ in the newspaper Nippon. Almost concurrently with this theoretical essay about the tanka, he published, also in Nippon, the series “Ten Poems in a Hundred.“ These were several groups of ten tanka each, each group having been chosen by a friend from a larger group of one hundred by Shiki. They were meant to be concrete examples of tanka written in conformity to the theories expounded in “Letters to a Tanka Poet”, and they show clearly the close relation that existed between Shiki’s poetic theory and practice at this time.
However, under the impact of the physical suffering imposed by the tuberculosis that would take his life at age 35, Shiki’s awareness of death became stronger and his perception of the relation between himself and the world around him changed. These changes were reflected in his tanka, but he made no attempt to account for them in his poetic theory. In other words, his practice overtook his theory. The disjunction is especially pronounced in the tanka of the last three years of his life, from 1900 to 1902. The theory that might account for these tanka was not, perhaps, articulated until after Shiki’s death, by his disciple Ito Sachio and, a generation later, by Sachio’s disciple, Saitō Mokichi.
