内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 For complex reasons--artistic, social, political biographical--Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241) came to occupy a unique position as Japan's pre-eminent authority on classical waka. His reputation was built upon the high quality of his own verse, his influence as a teacher of poetry to others, and his particular literary ideals and tastes. His ideals and tastes are expressed implicitly in his poetry and in the anthologies of the poems of others which he compiled, and explicitly in his treatises and critical statements.
To the modern student, raised in the shadow of Romantic expressive-objective theories of poetry, Teika's pragmatic emphasis in such treatises as Kindai Shūka, Eiga no Taigai, and Maigetushō may seem to slight the rôle of inspiration and innate poetic feeling in the creative process. Such a judgment must be modified, however, in the light of the record of Teika's poetic accomplishment and his development as an artist. The Western student in particular must investigate not only the treatises but also the poems that Teika composed and the poems of others that he seems to have esteemed. The poetic treatises are of course extremely important--the Maigetsushō, for example, is the locus classicus of Teika's dominant aesthetic ideal of ushin, or “intense feeling. “At the same time, the concerns and preoccupations of the treatises must be interpreted Teika and Shinkokin Poetics in the light of the specific circumstances of their composition and the audience to whom they were addressed.
It is perhaps true that on balance Teika's critical preoccupation was more with the pragmatic-prescriptive aspect of composition than with the abstract-idealistic nature of the creative act. However, such a preoccupation was inevitable in view of his rôle as a teacher of poetry to others, and is not evidence of a lack of poetic temperament in Teika himself. On the other hand, in the generations that followed Teika, an overemphasis upon pragmatic-prescriptive concerns led to an undervaluation of originality and inspiration in a predominantly conservative and conventional poetic tradition.
