内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Yaoya Oshichi-Oshichi, the greengrocer's daughter, depicted in legend as having been burned at the stake at age sixteen for setting a fire in order to be reunited with her lover-is thought to be a historical figure who lived in the late 17th century.
In the 300 years since her death, her story has deen depicted in works of every genre of literature. Depictions of the Oshichi story in the joruri and kabuki theater of the Edo period were particularly instrumental in spreading her story among the people of pre-modern Japan. These depictions, however, by no means necessarily reflected what is thought to be the truth about the Oshichi incident, emphasizing instead shuko, or clever, innovative reinterpretations of the Oshichi story. In the 200 years between Oshichi's death and end of Edo period, not only her story, but also her character itself, were radically altered according to the demands of the people of the Edo period. Although the historical Oshichi was guilty of a serious crime for which she paid with her life, we see in the drama of the Edo period a tendency to lessen her crime and to give her story a happy ending, as well as to re-shape Oshichi's character according to the contemporary feminine ideal. As a result, Oshichi becomes a heroine, but at the same time, her stylized character may also be said to lose much of its force and individuality.
