内容記述 | The "traditions" of Japanese literature are deeply rooted in its long history, and it is interesting to note that women writers have played a major role in creating and maintaining these traditions. Moreover, "women's literature" has become a tradition in itself, one that continues to the present day. Modern writers such as Enchi Fumiko seem to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors as they uphold the traditions originated by such women writers as Murasaki Shikibu. Familiar with Heian and Edo literature from an early age, Enchi Fumiko was strongly influenced by these classical works-a fact obvious in the underlying themes seen throughout her literature. And yet, although her modern translations of such works as Genji Monogatari are well known, few studies have been done regarding the influence of these classics on her literature. Many aspects of Enchi's novels, such as the association of the seasons with emotions, the use of time and space in development of the story, or the suggestion of the existence of mysterious or supernatural elements, bring to mind the classical monogatari. Ench deals with Japanese women and their daily struggles with such problems as love, sexuality and old age. And, although the setting is usually a modern one, the unique strength possessed by these women is very often manifested through the use of elements taken from classical Japanese literature. Most outstanding is the manner in which Enchi brings the world of "living spirits" to the supposedly rational, modern world in her portrayal of Japanese women. While considering this type of Japanese spiritualism, this study will attempt to define how these "spiritual aspects" are used by Enchi and also to demonstrate that this type of fusion of classical and modern elements is a characteristic feature of Enchi Fumiko's literature. |
