| 内容記述 | Following the reopening of Japan in the 1850's, large numbers of pioneering people from Europe and America came to Japan, either pursuing official missions or drawn by the spirit of adventure. Yet during its long period of self-imposed isolation, information about Japan had been unavailable in Europe or America. How did those who came to Japan with no advance knowledge deal with the language, what books did they read, and how did they understand the rich but complex literature of the age? In researching and writing about J.C. Hepburn, I learned about many foreigners who came to Japan from a variety of countries, and would like to pay tribute to their efforts. | |||||
