内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In his late years, nearly thirty years after publishing "Ugetsu Monogatari", Ueda Akinari wrote "Harusame Monogatari". In comparing "Harusame Monogatari " with "Ugetsu Monogatari", one will find that the distinguishing feature of "Harusame Monogatari" lies at every turn in its reflection of Akinari's long years of Kokugaku studies.
'Me hitotsu no kami', the fifth story of "Harusame monogatari", focuses on the description of a most bizarre banquet at midnight held by one-eyed god (me hitotsu no kami), monsters, animals, and two men. This is the reason why it has been appraised as a mysterious and romantic story written along the lines of "Ugetsu Monogatari", and has therefore been regarded as a distinctive work among the "Harusame Monogatari "stories.
However, if we read this work while referring to Akinari's late essays or his Kokugaku writings, we can understand that the banquet is not merely a setting for the story, but symbolizes the ideal world composed of the truthful and genuine beings, by contrast with the human society full of desires and falsefoods. I think that Akinari's ideal world is closely connected with Kodo (古道) which Kokugaku scholar Kamo no Mabuchi thought as the ideal world of ancient Japan before the introduction of the foreign culture. And, the criticism of initiation into the world of waha (socalled Kokindenju) and the advice for self-study narrated by god, are also similar to Mabuchi's thought.
In conclusion, 'Me hitotsu no kami' is by no means a mystical or romantic work. I think it is a figuration of Akinari's ideas influenced by Mabuchi, as the other short stories of the collection "Harusame Monogatari".
