| 内容記述 | Kyokutei Bakin (1767-1848) wrote Nanso-Satomi-Hakkenden, which has been said to be based on the Confucian ideal and the principle of a dychotomy, i.e. good and evil. But a perusal and symbolical analysis of the work indicate greatly different aspects. At first, this long work can be divided into the former half, which consists of a fantastic, intriguing erotic story like a Gothic tale, while the latter half consists of a purified, rational hero's progress on a predetermined way of success. These differences of tone are deliberate. In the former half, several women appear and prevent, as it were, the unification of the world. As in American novels, fear of women in the flesh seen in the former half eventually eliminates the chaos represented by women and dragons. The primordial heroine Fusehime apparently inherits the figure of Toyotamahime in Japanese myth, which changes into a dragon and bears a child. She and one of the hero's wives, Hinakinu, share the characteristics of a dragon. Hamaji and Funamushi, notwithstanding their characterization, represent two types of wandering nobles (Kishu-ryuri-tan). At the end of Chapter 8, several ways of the elimination of this chaos occur simultaneously, and a sole mother appears as the ruler of this purified world. This is the plot of the work. |
