内容記述 | Modernism'is considered one of the most important terms for analyzing twentieth-century Western culture and art. According to Jeremy Hawthorn," Modernism describes that art which sought to break with what had become the dominant and dominating conventions of nineteenth-century art and culture. The most important of these conventions is probably that of realism" ("A Concise Glossary of Literary Theory" 1992). However, the real significance of the influence of modernism on contemporary Japanese literature is not yet clear. It is often said that modern Japanese literature ,"nihon kindai bungaku", began with the adoption of Western literary theory in the middle of the 19th century. And so in the early twentiethcentury, we sought the style of modern novel in the form of "shizenshugi-bungaku", translated as realism. Thus, we avoided, in advance the dominating conventions that Western literature had been trying to overcome. We can notice this inconsistency when examining the individuality of modern Japanese literature. I will consider this subject in my interpretation of "Kasoujinbutsu"("A Masked Man" ) which has been considered an extreme example of "shishosetsu". Isoda Koichi commented "Modernism has also taken root by adding something to our convention." ("The Lineage of Rokumeikan" 1983). We have to consider his opinion that contemporary Japanese literature has developed by retaining elements of our literary tradition which adapting recent Western ideology. I will discuss this contradictory apolia by comparing the style of shishosetsu, which is always criticized as old fashioned even though it continues to exist, with the definition of modernism in Western literature. |
