内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Ogai wrote about 'clouds' frequently in his diary. In a previous paper I clarified the difference between the classical Chinese poems of Ogai and Soseki on this score. It concluded that while Ogai visualized the 'cloud' Soseki conceptualized it.
The word 'cloud'appears frequently in Ogai's novels, a total of 185 times in fact. If examples of its use in personal and place names in the historical novels are subtracted from the total 33 instances remaim. It is particularly noteworthy that these last occur with particular frequency in Seinen. In this paper I will inquire into the usage of the word 'cloud' in Seinen and compare it with its usage in Soseki's Sanshirô, a work which is often contrasted with Seinen in literary history and thereby try to clarify the difference between the senses conveyed by that word in Ogai and Soseki.
I have decided to conduct this investigation making the appearance of the 'cloud 'in Seinen the main axis and its use in "Ueno no Yama,"the place where the cloud appears in the novel, the secondary axis. I conclude that the word 'cloud 'was introduced as an index in order to describe the landscape of Jun'ichi's mental image. It can also be said that the word 'cloud' is used as a symbol of Mrs Sakai, a character who bewitches Jun'ichi. And we can conclude that in the development of the relationship between Jun'ichi and Mrs Sakai 'cloud 'plays the role of a keyword.
As a keyword in Sanshirô 'cloud' is used throughout as an index of the developing relationship between Sanshirô and Mineko. At the same time we must also acknowledge that 'cloud 'is a symbol of Mineko, the object of Sanshirô's longing.
The above two works share the use of 'cloud' as a symbol of the object of their protagonists' interests.
The special quality of 'cloud' in the two works differs however. While 'cloud' in Sanshirô merely indicates the simple object of longing, in Seinen it dose that and additionally indicates the object of a temptation which includes the meaning of a struggle of the protagonist's reason, something of a composite.
We cannot say with confidence that Ogai, on reading Sanshirô, saw through the role being played by the word 'cloud' and introduced it into his own work Seinen. However, considering that Seinen is the only novel of Ogai's in which 'cloud' is a distinctive expression, we can say that the role played by 'cloud 'in Seinen results in it resembling the role played by that word in Sanshirô. Consequently, we must admit that these two works are intimately related in this point and at the same time that a delicate distinction is evident in the use of this word by Ogai and Soseki. Both share a particular concern with the word 'cloud' and employ the technique of expressing the object of longing in the guise of a 'cloud'.
