内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The term dilettantism, which had not necessarily been derogatory before the rise of Romanticism in Europe, began to be used in Japan after the Russo-Japanese War by Naturalist critics to attack writers of an Anti-naturalist tendency such as Natsume Sōseki, Mori Ōgai and Ueda Bin. Kinoshita Mokutarō had also been labelled as a dilettante, i.e. an irresponsible amateur writer, throughout his literary life. This label seems to be one of the causes of the long-standing low estimation of this complex, humanist writer both in and outside Japan.
At a glance Mokutarō seems to have succumbed to this evaluation ;he called himself a dilettante and gave up writing fiction, the genre regarded ever since the period of Naturalism as the most important of all literary genres. His self-admission of being a dilettante, however, should be seen as an expression of his scepticism, which, together with his sensitivity and interest in the humanities, forms the core of his literature. Unlike the hero of Bin's Vortex or that of Kafū's Sneers, Mokutarō never advocated dilettantism but rather pursued his studies of the humanities under the guise of a dilettante. It was not his critics but Mokutarō himself who knew exactly the freedom and the limitations of this guise.
