| 内容記述 | Many of Akutagawa's stories begin with a description of sunset, and in a previous paper I have examined this feature of his work. The well-known story Rashomon, set in the Heian Period, likewise takes place "one day at twilight" and unfolds at the narrow boundary between day and night. The unique allure of the "evening twilight", mixing unease and anticipation as it proceeds from light to dark, has long been a traditional motif of Japanese Literature. There is the evening twilight as observed in the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, whose sensitivity to such matters prompted her to remark that "the evening twilight is Autumn." In The Tale of Genji we come across an unexpectedly rainy twilight (in the Wakamurasaki Chapter) and the evening twilight symbolizing the dramatic notion that Beauty is destined to live only briefly (Yugao). A variety of Heian twilights are exquisitely recorded in Konjaku Monogatari. Akutagawa was one of the first men of his age to be a devoted reader of Konjaku Monogatari from which he extracted the imagery of twilight, putting it into effect in Rashomon. In this story, the author uses twilight as a method of constructing an incident wherein people meet and head on into the night. Akutagawa retained his fascination in this concept of "evening twilight" and when he came to compose his posthumously published work "The Life of an Idiot" he had turned his concentration from the passage of day to night to the transience of life and death. |
