内容記述 | Teika-kyô Hyakuban Jika-awase is an anthology of one hundred poems by Fujiwara no Teika, arranged by the author himself in the style of an uta-awase (poem contest). When one looks beyond the individual poems and regards the anthology as a whole, it is possible to consider it in terms of various structural levels. For example, one could consider it as having a purely phonetic existence, or one could trace the flow of the work by following the themes of the individual poems (snow, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, etc.). No doubt one could also pay attention to the connections between the key words in each poem or focus on the placement of makura kotoba (pillow words). The image of this uta-awase collection as a whole comes from the overlapping of these various levels. Teika's special technique of honkadori (borrowings from earlier poems), which is apparent in the arrangement of the waka (poems) in this collection, offers an additional means of analyzing the structure of this anthology. Teika-kyô Hyakuban Jika-awase includes an extremely large number of poems that make use of the honkadori technique. As is well known through other works by Teika, such as Eiga no Taigai or Maigetsu-shô, the changes made in honkadori segments of a poem were done deliberately. Thus, as the reader progresses through the work, it can be thought that the world of the original poem unfolds at the same time as that of the modified poem. I believe that when one examines this uta-awase collection from these various angles, it becomes clear that Teika's rhetorical techniques are quite different from those of any other poet in Hachidai-shū (The first eight waka collections compiled by royal order). Therefore, in this presentation, I would like to start from that assumption and examine Teika's stance regarding the history of waka as that stance is revealed in the structure, the use of expression, and the arrangement of the poems in the Haru no bu (Spring section) of this anthology. |
