内容記述 | Usually, translation is thought to occur between separate languages. However, when classical literature is interpreted or commented upon to carry it on into modern times, or when modern language translations are made, this can be seen as a translation inside one language, from its classical to modern form. There are things to be learned by looking at modern language renditions of classics in the same light as translations across different languages. Following Futabatei Shimei, Japan’s literati tried to construct new writing styles through the translation of foreign literature. However, the “unified style” born of this process did not make use of the long-refined literary Japanese language. The variety of written expression in Japanese was eliminated. In response to the state of the written language, another style was sought through the translation of classical works. The work of Tanizaki Junichiro needs to be viewed in such a light. In the October and November 1929 issues of Chuuou Kouron, Tanizaki published his translation of the tale Sannin Houshi. In the preface he writes “The author will be satisfied should this in some way convey the flow and pattern of older Japanese writing.” At the same time in the November issue of Kaizou in his article “The Problems with the Modern Written Language” he points out that the “unified style” that started in the Meiji period has “nearly reached a state of completion”, and reexamines the unified style in order to bring classical language into the modern. For Tanizaki, the modern language translations of Sannin Houshi and Genji Monogatari were a way to rework the modern language through the old. Tanizaki’s attention to the classics has often been said to have been a way to create his unique stories. What is important, though, is that Tanizaki recognized that Japanese was in a state of change, and made it his job to make use of classical language and flow in modern writing. This presentation will look at the role of modern translations of classics during this period of massive change in the written Japanese language, centered on Tanizaki’s work. We will look at how classical language has been carried over to today, and how it has broadened the Japanese language. |
