| 内容記述 | Kajii Motojiro’s (1901-1932) early death from TB meant that he left just twenty short stories. Today, he is best known for “Lemon” (1925). While he is a “minor” writer in the history of modern Japanese literature, his distinctive style, set in the context of the period he was active from 1925 to 1932 opens a Variety of ways to explore links between his literature and times. In this paper, I examine how TB, which eventually killed Kajii, also provided him with a rich source of literary creativity. Due to illness, Kajii was “exiled” at an onsen for 16 months in Izu Peninsula, and this exile marks his exclusion from the cultural and literary centre of Tokyo. However, the onsen was also an important meeting point for visiting writers and intellectuals. Moreover, TB empowered Kajii by providing links to other socially and politically marginalized groups. In particular, the illness stimulated his exploration of the “nervous debilitation” (shinkei suijaku) prominent among Taisho youths. In short, this paper suggests that, at a personal level, Kajii transformed TB into a source of creative empowerment; in broader social terms, his articulation of TB offers useful insights into the cultural and political mentality of his age. | |||||
