| 内容記述 | In an epoch in which a return to close textual analysis is claimed in literary theory, great emphasis is given to research methods which aim at exploring the unique essence of a text through a detailed examination of it. It goes without saying that this trend in theory has begun affecting actual research, and it can be predicted that such an approach will be soon demanded also in the field of Japanese literary research overseas. Hence, the philological approach to textual research emphasized in Japan from the past will likely become the indispensable foundation for Japanese literary studies, particularly meaningful in the area of classical literature. This presentation will examine all the problems involved with this kind of research methodology. I will base myself both on research projects I have achieved in the past and on those still in progress. In particular, I will focus on the importance of using original works within the field of Japanese Edo period literature research, taking up related issues based on practical examples: those cases in which catalographic information is lacking in giving information about primary sources available in the West, the various difficulties in handling with materials preserved in Japanese collections, the importance to use originals when working on annotated transcriptions and / or translations as well as when taking up theoretical or comparative analysis. After analyzing the current state of Japanese literary research overseas from this point of view, I will discuss what I consider possible plans to reduce the geographical distance as well as the cultural distance (in most cases the most pressing one) which are the sources of many problems. To allow researchers of Japanese literature operating overseas to pursue appropriate bibliographical and philological research would become the first important step to enable them to take active part in the intellectual and scientific debates ongoing in Japanese academic world. I believe that in our epoch it is urgent to render possible this kind of “barrier-free” research and it is with this belief that I will examine in the above mentioned points. |
