内容記述 | In 1789, the first year of the Kansei period, the bakufu embarked on an ambitious national project to collect and investigate all existing records of individuals who during the Tokugawa period had been officially commended for their outstanding virtue. The results of this investigation were organized and published in 1801 as the Kankoku Kōgiroku (The Official Records of Righteousness and Filial Piety). In a total of 50 fascicles, the work lists the names of 8611 individuals, almost all of commoner status, and, in 755 of these cases, provides concrete illustration of that individual's virtue by means of a short biographical story written in simple kanamajiri-bun. These characteristics are quite remarkable when one considers the fact that the bulk of the bakufu publishing record consists of reprints of Chinese philosophical texts. The questions that naturally arise are then of course; why did the bakufu decide to publish the Kankoku Kōgiroku; why in this specific form; and why at this particular time? In this presentation I will attempt to answer these questions by examining the Kankoku Kōgiroku itself, as well as by comparing it with other so-called kōshiden (biographies of filial children) that were published at the time. I will argue that the Kankoku Kōgiroku was a grand display of virtue by which the bakufu sought to legitimize its presence within a political atmosphere that was obsessed with concepts like meikun (exemplary ruler) and jinsei (benevolent government). |
