内容記述 Konjaku Monogatarishū is an exemplary classification of a collection of stories under three headings of India (Tenjiku), China (Shintan) and Japan (Honcho).The compiler / (compilers) have further classified some volumes thematically and marked them with sub-headings. For example, in volume 4 and 5 in the Indian section (Tenjiku Hen), there are sub-headings, i.e. “After Buddha” (Butsugo) and “Before Buddha” (Butsuzen). Since this kind of pairing of opposite or similar words / concepts is commonly prevalent in the scheme of Konjaku, one can very well understand the rationale behind it.
However in Buddhist literature the term “Before Buddha” has a peculiar connotation that refers to the various former Buddhas or the former lives of Buddha as Bodhisattva. The question arises as to whether it is used in this sense or in general to suggest the society at large before Buddha?
In the Buddhist literature too it can refer to the former lives of Buddha as Bodhisattva as depicted in the Jataka or the lives of the various previous Buddhas starting with Dipankara Buddha. In what sense is it (Butsuzen) used in volume 5, paired with the sub heading of volume 4, i.e. “After Buddha” (Butsugo).
This paper attempts to look into this through an analysis of the contents of volume 5. Out of 32 tales in this volume, the direct reference to bodhisattva is found only in two cases i.e. story no.13 & no.21. At the same time a number of stories that are originally known to be the Bodhisattva stories are accounted in this volume without any mention of the Bodhisattva. For example, they are the story of offering himself to the hungry Tiger and the story of rare Golden deer. Does this absence of the name of Bodhisattva mean that the compiler tried to depict the social conditions “Before Buddha” on the basis of Bodhisattva stories? Or he aims to uphold the concept of “Paramita” (Haramitsu) associated with Bodhisattva? On a closer study one finds the frequent mention about Monks, Kannonsama (Aalokitesvara) etc. that appears unnatural if he were to describe the conditions before Buddha. This paper is an attempt to study such aspects of volume 5 (Butsuzen) of Indian section of the collection.
