内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The tenjigata-mitate is a mitate (early modern Japanese expression of association by unrelated elements) similar to kaichō (unveiling) and misemono (show) exhibitions. There are many kinds of representation of mitate in gesaku literature, ukiyo-e and genre materials. Most pictures feature a reihō (precious treasure) and a commentator (a monk) with a cane who gives an account of the reihō. Basically, the tenjigata-mitate consists of the three elements which are a reihō, spectators and a kōjō (messenger).
The kaichō was an occasion where many people gathered to see statues of Buddha, historic pictures which were owned by temples and vestiges of renowned people. The shows were held around the place where the kaichō were exhibited, availing themselves of the popularity of the kaichō. The Ekō-in temple and Ryōgoku hirokōji were the popular places for the kaichō and misemono, as well as theatres and the licensed quarters in Edo. The misemono of ‘tonda reihō’ which likened a kaichō was exhibited in Ryōgoku hirokōjiōin Anei 6 nen (1777). It was mentioned in the kibyōshi (an illustrated storybook with yellow covers) entitled ‘Mitsutakara rishō no wakatake’. According to the illustrations of the book, a man wearing a kamishimo (a ceremonial dress worn by the samurai) who points a fudōmyōoh (Acala) made from dry foods out with a cane, and next to the fudōmyōoh, sanzonbutsu made from flatfishes and turban shells, were shown. Although the misemono ‘tonda reihō’ was never displayed hereafter, a similar misemono called ‘odoke engi’ which used a similar technique was exhibited. ‘Tonda reihō’, ‘odoke engi’ and ‘tsukurimono’ which actually were performed, are interesting since they were the examples in which the expressive technique of mitate was shown to the spectators directly.
In this presentation, I would like to analyze the tenjigata-mitate which were written in gesaku literature by dint of its materials and methods. The tenjigata-mitate is suggestive of kaichō and misemono. I hope this presentation will promote a better understanding of the important expressive techniques of Edo culture ‘mitate’ which likens something to another object.
