| 内容記述 | The present study is an attempt to examine the philosophical and anthropological significance of the Botsu-riso controversy, especially from today's point of view. This controversy.which took place between two eminent Japanese men of letters of the Meiji period, Tsubouchi Shyoyo and Mori Ogai, has been considered one of the most important events in the history of modern Japanese literature; but its philosophical and anthropological significance has not been studied enough. Differing from the common interpretation of the controversy, which consists in opposing Tubouchi's position to Mori's as realism versus idealism or empiricism versus rationalism, my interpretation consists in defining it as Mori's demythicising fight against Tsubouchi's mythic mind. In my opinion, the biggest contribution of the controversy is its revelation of Tsubouchi's hidden logic whose nature is common to any mythic mind: "logic of senses"or "logic of signs"in contrast with our "normal"logic of abstract concepts. Today, we see in many parts of the world ideological conflicts between the mythic mind and demythicizing mind, especially where "modernization" is going on. We can consider the controversy between Tsubouchi and Mori as one of the early and typical written examples of such human ideological conflicts. |
