内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The period of some one hundred years after the transfer of the capital to Kyoto in 794 was one full of variety in literature, the old being mixed with the new. The representative new literature of those days was the Chinese classical literature which developed in the first half of the ninth century among the Court nobility. In about the same period, Japanese Legends of Miraculous Retribution (Nihon Ryô-iki) and one long Waka poem which the priests at the Kôhuku temple dedicated to the Emperor in 849 were composed by the priests who belonged to the old temples in Nara. The Tale of the Bamboo-hewer is thought to have been written some 25 to 50 years after those two works and has some similarities in thought with them. So we can infer that the scene of the Tale of the Bamboo-hewer is set in the Province of Yamato, and that this story was written by someone who had something to do with that province. The author might have been a nobleman of low rank during the Heian period who became a priest or was living the life of a recluse after retiring.
The Tale of the Bamboo-hewer can be compared with short tales written in verse (lai and fabliau in French) which developed in Northern France in the 12th and 13th centuries. These two kinds of short tales in France are, of course, different from each other. The early lai, for instance, may have some similarities with "Uta Monogatari "(short stories which tells about the background of the composition of the Waka poems) in volume 16 of the Manyôshû.
What I will try to do here is to find out the similarities and differences between the Tale of the Bamboo-hewer and two kinds of short tales of medival France, considering the social circumstances of two countries, Japan and France, at that time.
